With technological advances in reproduction no longer confined to the laboratory or involving only the isolated individual, women and men are increasingly resorting to a variety of technologies unheard of a few decades ago to assist them in becoming parents. The public at large, and feminists as a group, are confused and divided over how to view these technologies and over what positions to take on the moral and legal dilemmas they give rise to. Origène réplique point par point aux arguments que Celse avait invoqués pour rejeter la caricature du culte des images composée par la polémique chrétienne. Il taxe les philosophes d’inconséquence. Au-delà du pamphlet de Celse, il pourfend une thèse que l’adversaire n’exploitait pas, mais qui était fortrépandue: le culte des statues et des images des dieux aurait une valeur symbolique. Ce symbolisme est attesté chez Plutarque, Dion Chrysostome, Maxime de Tyr, plus tard chez Porphyre. Sa diversité a pour origine la (...) complexité des propos de Platon sur la manière de représenter les dieux. Origène veut dénoncer comme illusoire la signification attribuée à de tels «symboles». Ses propres réflexions dans le Contre Celse leur opposent une conception du «symbole» qui, tout en insistant sur sa matérialité, sa visibilité, son historicité, le distingue de l’«image» mimétique, pour l’orienter vers autre chose que lui. Originally published in 1963, this classic book is a rethinking of the history of Western political philosophy. Charles N. R. McCoy contrasts classical-medieval principles against the "hypotheses" at the root of modern liberalism and modern conservativism. In Part I, "The Classical Christian Tradition from Plato to Aquinas," the author lays the foundation for a philosophical "structure" capable of producing "constitutional liberty." Part II, "The Modern Theory of Politics from Machiavelli to Marx," attempts to show, beginning with Machiavelli, the reversal and (...) destruction of the pre-modern "structure" postulated in Part I. McCoy stresses the great contributions of Aristotle to political thought found in his more familiar Ethics and Politics, but also includes key insights drawn from Metaphysics and Physics. These contributions are developed and perfected, McCoy argues, by Augustine and Aquinas. Two other important features include McCoy's epistemological insights into Plato's work that will be new to many readers and the author's juxtaposition of traditional natural law with "the modernized theory of natural law." The modern account of autonomous natural law, in McCoy's view, helps explain the totalitarian direction of key aspects of modern political thought. Il semble toujours nécessaire de rapprocher les deux monuments (autel circulaire et tronc à offrandes) exhumés sur l'agora de Thasos ; la statue du héros était peut-être établie sur le tronc à offrandes au centre de l'agora. The main idea behind the first argument is that the state has effectively taken control of the incidents of ownership through its taxation, spending, and regulatory policies.
